Assessment in Health and Physical Education isn't always easy. It's no longer just about assessing correct form and athletic skills or abilities, teachers also need to assess active participation, an understanding and appreciation of physical activity, and demonstrations of safe behaviour. Additionally, the HPE curriculum includes the assessment of Living Skills in relation to the Active Living, Movement Competence, and Healthy Living strands. But with creativity, focus, and sometimes technology, it can be made easy.
My Favourite HPE Self-Assessment Method
My first associate teacher used a great method of self-assessment after each Phys Ed class and I loved how much insight it gave her. After lining up to leave the gym, she asked each student to give themselves a level for that class by holding up 1, 2, 3, or 4 fingers. They were to take into account their participation, attitude, and (sometimes) ability. When I taught HPE myself, I used this self-assessment method and loved it. It allowed me to see which students were self-aware, especially when it came to teamwork and attitude. It also gave me a view into the students' comfort and enjoyment levels - students who clearly didn't enjoy the lesson or phys ed in particular, or felt inferior or lacked confidence, often graded themselves lower. This allowed me insight into their feelings, which gave me a chance to address these issues individually or as a whole class.
